Gist

Four kinds of virtuous men worship Me, O Arjun; the seekers of wealth, the ones who are severely afflicted, the ones who eagerly engage in the quest for knowledge, and the wise ones who have attained true knowledge.

Explanation

  1. Virtuous men perform actions for the pleasure of Krishna through a natural affinity for Him. They belong to two catagories: (i) who perform oblations, charity, penance and other duties according to their caste and creed for Krishna or offer them to Krishna. (ii) the ones who perform only those activities which are essentially related to Krishna like chanting His name, constantly remembering him, listening to and narrating his pastimes.
  2. Those who have developed inclination towards Krishna are fortunate, most superior and truly deserve to be called human beings. This inclination could have developed from past pious actions or due to some severe calamity or due to the company of virtuous men (satsang) or study of sacred books. That day when inclination towards Krishna springs up in the heart is indeed a sacred day.
  3. There are four kinds of devotees who worship Krishna and seek refuge in Him.

(i) Seekers of wealth – those devotees who want wealth and prosperity but seek it only from Krishna and from no one else are included in this class. The one who resorts to other means to fulfil his desire for worldly wealth, but sometimes invokes Krishna also for it is only a seeker of wealth and not a devotee. His principal desire is for riches whereas a devotee seeking wealth regards his relationship with God to be of paramount importance. By remaining engrossed in Krishna this desire for wealth gets gradually eliminated.

One day Dhruva wanted to sit in the lap of his father, Maharaja Uttanpad, but his step mother, Suruchi did not allow him to do so. She told him- ‘you have not worshipped God, you are unlucky, you are born to your unlucky mother, Suniti, and hence you do not deserve to sit in the lap of your father. Dhruva narrated the incident to his mother. Suniti replied, ‘Son! Your step mother is right. Neither you have praised the Lord nor have I worshipped Him. To this Dhruva replied-‘Mother, now I will worship Him”; saying so he set out to the dense forest. On the way, he met the sage Narad; he pointed out to Dhruva several dangers of the forest such as the presence of wild animals etc. and suggested that he (Dhruva) should go back. But Dhruva’s faith in God got intenstified still further by this obstruction and he told Narad, ‘Sir, from now onwards I am going to be engaged solely in the worship of God’. Seeing such a firm resolve in Dhruva who was only a 5-years old child, sage Narad imparted to him the sacred mantra (Om-Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaye) and explained the method to concentrate the mind on Lord Vishnu.

(ii)Distessed Devotees:– In adversity they cry out only to Krishna to lift them out of their miseries. In the epic Mahabharata, when Ashwathama had shot the burning iron arrow to destroy the womb of Uttara, (wife of Abhimanyu) she had immediately cried out to Krishna alone to save her unborn child. Krishna came without the slightest delay and protected the king Parikshit, then being nurtured in her womb.

(iii)Knowledge-seeking devotees  – the devotees who have a strong desire to know the self and the Supreme Divine and who want to attain that knowledge from Krishna and no one else are known as devotees driven by the thirst for knowledge.

(IV)Wise devotes Such devotees perceive favorable and unfavorable circumstances, all incidents, all persons, objects etc as manifestations of Krishna. They are engrossed only in their love for Krishna and have not even an iota of worldly desire.

Gopis of Gokul-Vrindavan are well-known for being such devotees. Sages affirm that it is only God who loves His creation in reality and men can also develop true affinity (love) only for God. The reason is that only he can love who expects nothing from his beloved. God never has the slightest desire to receive anything from His creatures. Hence God alone loves in reality.
