Bhagavad Gita 14.8: Verse 8

तमस्त्वज्ञानजं विद्धि मोहनं सर्वदेहिनाम्।
प्रमादालस्यनिद्राभिस्तन्निबध्नाति भारत।।14.8।।

भावार्थ - Gist

हे भरतवंशी! तमोगुण को शरीर के प्रति मोह के कारण अज्ञान से उत्पन्न हुआ समझ, जिसके कारण जीव प्रमाद (पागलपन में व्यर्थ के कार्य करने की प्रवृत्ति), आलस्य (आज के कार्य को कल पर टालने की प्रवृत्ति) और निद्रा (अचेत अवस्था में न करने योग्य कार्य करने की प्रवृत्ति) द्वारा बँध जाता है।।14.8।।

O scion of Bharat! Understand that tamoguna (mode of ignorance or darkness) is born of ignorance; it binds the spirit (which believes in its affinity with body) through contrariness, indolence and sleep.

व्याख्या - Explanation

1) यह तमोगुण अज्ञान से अर्थात् बेसमझी से, मूर्खता से पैदा होता है तथा देहधारियों को मोहित कर देता है और उन्हें विवेक नहीं होने देता। यह तो सुख-भोग और संग्रह में भी नहीं लगने देता, अर्थात् राजस सुख में भी नहीं जाने देता, फिर सात्विक सुख की तो बात ही क्या है ?
2) तमोगुण प्रमाद, आलस्य और निद्रा के द्वारा सम्पूर्ण देहधारियों को बाँध देता है। प्रमाद दो तरह का होता है-
(क) करने लायक कर्मों (कर्तव्य कर्मों) को न करना और
(ख) न करने लायक कर्मों को करना अर्थात् जिस काम से अपना और दुनिया का अभी और परिणाम में अहित होता है, उसको करना।
3) तीनों गुण मनुष्य को बाँधते हैं, पर इनके बाँधने के प्रकार में अन्तर है। सत्त्वगुण और रजोगुण तो संग से बाँधते हैं, परन्तु तमोगुण संग से बाँधता है- ऐसा नहीं कहा, क्योंकि तमोगुण मोहात्मक है। यह तो स्वरूप से ही बाँधने वाला होता है।

  1. Tamoguna is born of ignorance or stupidity; it deludes the person and stops his intellect from functioning. This mode does not even allow a person to seek the enjoyments and wealth of the world, i.e. the person under its predominance cannot make a move towards rajas enjoyment; let alone experience sattvik joy and clarity of intellect.
  2. Tamoguna binds all embodied spirits with its attributes of contrariness, indolence and sleep. Contrariness is of two kinds:     a) Refusing to perform prescribed actions and    b) Wilfully engaging in forbidden actions which leads to ill effects on society , in present and future times.
  3. All the gunas bind the creature, but with a difference. Satoguna and rajoguna bind the person through attachment, but tamoguna operates directly through non-functioning of intellect, delusion and indolence.
