Bhagavad Gita 16.24: Verse 24

तस्माच्छास्त्रं प्रमाणं ते कार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ।
ज्ञात्वा शास्त्रविधानोक्तं कर्म कर्तुमिहार्हसि।।16.24।।

भावार्थ - Gist

इससे तेरे लिए इस कर्तव्य और अकर्तव्य की व्यवस्था में शास्त्र ही प्रमाण है। ऐसा जानकर तू शास्त्र विधि से नियत कर्म ही करने योग्य है ॥16.24॥

Therefore in order to discriminate between what is duty and what is not your duty, recognize the scriptures as the true authority. Knowing by the ordinance of the scriptures what is your prescribed duty, you will be capable of performing those prescribed actions.

व्याख्या - Explanation

.(1) तू कर्तव्य और अकर्तव्य का निर्णय करने के लिये शास्त्र को सामने रख। जिनकी महिमा शास्त्रों ने गायी है और जिनका आचरण शास्त्रीय सिद्धान्तों के अनुसार होता है, ऐसे संत-महापुरुषों के वचनों और आचरण के अनुसार चलना भी शास्त्रों के अनुसार ही चलना है। ऐसे महापुरुष शास्त्रों के अनुसार आचरण करने से ही श्रेष्ठ बने हैं।
(2) अर्जुन समझ रहा था कि युद्ध करने से उसे पाप लगेगा और कृष्ण ने 2.32 में बताया कि अपने-आप प्राप्त धर्ममय युद्ध भाग्यशाली क्षत्रियों को ही प्राप्त होता है। यह स्वर्ग को देने वाला है। अतः अब कृष्ण कह रहे हैं कि तू पाप-पुण्य का निर्णय अपने मनमाने ढंग से कर रहा है, तुझे तो इस विषय में शास्त्र को ही प्रमाण रखना चाहिये। इसका तात्पर्य यह है कि युद्ध रूप क्रिया बाँधने वाली नहीं है, प्रत्युत स्वार्थ और अभिमान रखकर की हुई शास्त्रीय क्रिया (यज्ञ, दान आदि) भी बाँधने वाली हो जाती है और मनमाने ढंग से (शास्त्र के विपरीत) की हुई क्रिया तो पतन करने वाली होती है।

  1. In order to discriminate between worthy and unworthy actions uphold the scriptures as your touchstone. Acting according to the precepts and conduct of the saints and God-realized souls, whose lives are exemplary, also constitutes living according to scriptures. Such great souls have attained their spiritual elevation only by faithfully following the scriptures.
  2. Arjun was under the misapprehension that by fighting the battle he would incur sin, while Krishna in 2.32 said that only the fortunate Kshatriyas in their lifetime come face-to-face with such a battle. Such a battle leads the Kshatriya to heaven. Here Krishna is indicating that Arjun is deciding the issue of good and evil according to the arbitrary dictates of his own heart, whereas such a decision needs to be based upon the proven authority of scriptures. Krishna means to convey that fighting in a holy battle will not lead to bondage of actions; on the contrary even prescribed actions (sacrifices, charity etc.) which are performed under the evil passions of pride and selfish interests lead a person into bondage of karma; further, actions performed according to one’s own likes and dislikes (in opposition to scriptures) lead a man to his destruction.
