Bhagavad Gita 17.13: Verse 13
विधिहीनमसृष्टान्नं मन्त्रहीनमदक्षिणम्।
श्रद्धाविरहितं यज्ञं तामसं परिचक्षते।।17.13।।
भावार्थ - Gist
शास्त्रविधि से हीन, अन्नदान से रहित, बिना मन्त्रों के, बिना दक्षिणा के और बिना श्रद्धा के किए जाने वाले यज्ञ को तामस यज्ञ कहते हैं ৷৷17.13॥
The sacrifice which is performed without the sanctions of scriptures, is devoid of food offerings, void of the chanting of sacred verses, void of respectful offerings to Brahmins, and bereft of faith is called tamasika (in mode of ignorance).
व्याख्या - Explanation
तामस यज्ञ में दान नहीं दिया जाता, कारण कि तामस पुरुषों का भाव यह रहता है कि हमने आहुति दे दी, ब्राह्मणों को भोजन करा दिया अब दक्षिणा देने की क्या जरूरत है ? दक्षिणा देने से वे आलसी-प्रमादी हो जायेंगे, कुछ परिश्रम करके कमायेंगे नहीं आदि। वे तामसी मनुष्य यह नहीं सोचते कि दक्षिणा देने से ब्राह्मण प्रमादी बनें, या न बनें, पर शास्त्रविधि का, अपने कर्तव्य का त्याग करने से हम तो प्रमादी बन ही गये।
In tamasika yagya no gifts are offered to Brahmins, as the performers of such sacrifices feel inwardly that they have made offerings to the sacred fire, have offered food to Brahmins, so where is the necessity of offering money or gifts as well? By receiving free gifts they will become lazy and perverse, they will develop the habit of living without any efforts to generate income. Such tamasika persons are unable to realize that by neglecting the instructions of scriptures they themselves have incurred the sin of perversity.
