Bhagavad Gita 3.5

Bhagavad Gita 3.5: Verse 5

Gist

Everyone, in any circumstances cannot abstain from work even for moment; because being under the control of nature qualities acquired from nature would force him to work.

Explanation

  1. Nature has two stages – active and passive (inactive) .To work is being active and sleeping , resting and not working is a passive stage. Even in this passive stage, the subtle or causal nature is secretively active. That is why when a sleeping person is woken up half way in his sleep he murmers I had yet not got the deep sleep – hence the sleep was growing progressively deeper and deeper. That is why after a deep sleep he doesn’t grumble in this manner.
  2. However, if we stop to think we would find that nature can never be passive; it is always changing. However, the soul never ever changes, it does neither good or evil but only because of it’s assumed relationship with the body the soul gets bound by the laws applying to nature.
