Bhagavad Gita 2.2: Verse 2

श्रीभगवानुवाच
कुतस्त्वा कश्मलमिदं विषमे समुपस्थितम्‌ ।
अनार्यजुष्टमस्वर्ग्यमकीर्तिकरमर्जुन॥2.2॥

भावार्थ - Gist

श्रीभगवान बोले- हे अर्जुन! तुझे इस असमय में यह मोह किस हेतु से प्राप्त हुआ? क्योंकि न तो यह श्रेष्ठ पुरुषों द्वारा आचरित है, न स्वर्ग को देने वाला है और न कीर्ति को करने वाला ही है॥2.2॥

The Lord addressing Arjun, spoke thus: In this moment of impending strife, how can you yield to this cowardliness, which is never harboured by great men and which neither leads to heaven nor earns earthly glory.

व्याख्या - Explanation

तीन प्रकार के मनुष्य होते हैं –
(1) विचारशील- ये श्रेष्ठ होते हैं।
(2) पुण्य कर्म करने वाले- स्वर्ग प्राप्ति की इच्छा वाले और
(3) संसार का आदर करने वाले- राजनीतिज्ञ, नौकरी करने वाले, व्यापारी आदि।
अधिकांश मनुष्य इसी श्रेणी के होते हैं, जिन्हें संसार के पदार्थों एवं भावों में विशेष आसक्ति होती है। इसलिये वे संसार में अपनी कीर्ति चाहते हैं और उस कीर्ति को ही अपना ध्येय मानते हैं। इस श्लोक में भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं- तुम्हारा यह जो युद्ध न करने का निश्चय है, यह तीनों ही श्रेणी के लोगों को शोभा नहीं देता।

Men may be divided into three catagories-

  1. The Thoughtful-  these are truly great ones.
  2. The ones who perform good deeds- these are driven by the desire for heaven and its pleasures.
  3. The ones who honour earthly institutions- e.g politicians, businessmen, salaried people etc

A majority of men belong to this third category. They are particularly attached to the materials and attitudes of this world. They desire glory upon earth and consider this glory to be their objective in life.
