Bhagavad Gita 9.25: Verse 25

यान्ति देवव्रता देवान्पितृन्यान्ति पितृव्रताः ।
भूतानि यान्ति भूतेज्या यान्ति मद्याजिनोऽपि माम्‌ ॥9.25॥

भावार्थ - Gist

देवताओं को पूजने वाले देवताओं को प्राप्त होते हैं, पितरों को पूजने वाले पितरों को प्राप्त होते हैं, भूतों को पूजने वाले भूतों को प्राप्त होते हैं और मेरा पूजन करने वाले भक्त मुझको ही प्राप्त होते हैं। इसीलिए मेरे भक्तों का पुनर्जन्म नहीं होता (गीता अध्याय 8 श्लोक 16 में देखना चाहिए)॥9.25॥

Those who worship devtas (demigods) (for fulfilmant of desires), go to devtas after death, whose who worship the manes go to the manes, those who adore the evil-spirits, join the evil-spirits. But, those who worship Me, attain Me, alone.

व्याख्या - Explanation

1) कृष्ण को न जानने के कारण मनुष्य वेदों में दिये हुए विधि विधान से देवताओं की पूजा करते हैं, अनुष्ठान करते हैं और उन देवताओं के परायण हो जाते हैं। (7.20)। फलरूप से वे देवता अपने भक्तों को अधिक से अधिक अपने लोकों में ले जायेंगे, जिन लोकों को कृष्ण ने पुनरावर्ती कहा है (8.16)।
2) इसी प्रकार लौकिक सिद्धि चाहने वाले पितरों को अपना इष्ट मानते हैं और फलरूप से अधिक से अधिक उनके लोकों को प्राप्त होते हैं।
तामस स्वभाव वाले सकामभाव पूर्वक भूत-प्रेतों का पूजन करते हैं और उनके नियम धारण करते हैं। इससे उनकी भौतिक कामनाएँ सिद्ध हो सकती हैं, किन्तु मरने के बाद तो उनकी दुर्गति ही होती है, क्योंकि उन्हें भूत-प्रेतों की योनि ही प्राप्त होगी।
3) (क) देवता, मनुष्य, पितर आदि की निष्काम भाव और भगवत्-बुद्धि से पूजा की जाये, तो भगवत्प्राप्ति हो जायेगी। वास्तव में इनको भगवान् से अलग मानना ही पतन का कारण है।
(ख) भूत-प्रेत आदि योनि ही अशुद्ध हैं और उनकी पूजा विधि भी अत्यन्त अपवित्र है। अतः इनके पूजन में भगवत्-बुद्धि तथा निष्कामभाव रखना सम्भव नहीं है। अतः इनको पूजने वालों का तो पतन ही होता है। अर्थात् देवताओं आदि की उपासना स्वरूप से त्याज्य नहीं है, परन्तु भूत-प्रेत आदि की उपासना तो स्वरूप से ही त्याज्य है।

  1.  (1)    Not knowing Krishna men worship demigods as per the procedures laid down in Vedas and follow the rites, relating to them (7.20). These demigods at best, would carry devotees to their abodes which have been termed by Krishna as subject to return (8.16).
  2. Similarly those who want fulfillment of their material desires worship the manes, regarding them as their favorite deity. The Manes, at best, take such devotees to their abodes. Those influenced by the mode of ignorance worship evil spirits to obtain fulfillment of their worldly desires. This could lead to fulfillment of their material desires but after death of the body they become evil spirits.
  3. (a) Worshipping demigods, men, manes etc without expecting anything from them and regarding them as forms of God would lead to attainment of God. In fact regarding the main cause of degradation is to see them as powers in their own right, independent of God.   (b) Birth as an evil spirit is impure and the procedure for worshipping them is also impure. Hence it is not possible to maintain an attitude of selflessness and godliness while worshipping evil spirits. Those who worship them propel themselves towards certain downfall. Hence worship of demigods etc is not to be renounced necessarily but worship of evil spirits is definitely to be renounced.
