Bhagavad Gita 17.5,6: Verse 5,6

अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यन्ते ये तपो जनाः।
दम्भाहङ्कारसंयुक्ताः कामरागबलान्विताः।।17.5।।

कर्षयन्तः शरीरस्थं भूतग्राममचेतसः।
मां चैवान्तःशरीरस्थं तान्विद्ध्यासुरनिश्चयान्।।17.6।।

भावार्थ - Gist

जो मनुष्य शास्त्र विधि से रहित केवल मनःकल्पित घोर तप को तपते हैं तथा दम्भ और अहंकार से युक्त एवं कामना, आसक्ति और बल के अभिमान से भी युक्त हैं  जो शरीर रूप से स्थित भूत समुदाय को और अन्तःकरण में स्थित मुझ परमात्मा को भी कृश करने वाले हैं (शास्त्र से विरुद्ध उपवासादि घोर आचरणों द्वारा शरीर को सुखाना एवं भगवान्‌ के अंशस्वरूप जीवात्मा को क्लेश देना, भूत समुदाय को और अन्तर्यामी परमात्मा को ”कृश करना” है।), उन अज्ञानियों को तू आसुर स्वभाव वाले जान  ৷৷17.5,6॥

Those men full of hypocrisy and egotism, who practise severe austerities not sanctioned by scriptures; who are driven by desire, worldly attachment and obstinacy; who torture the five elements of their body and even wound Me who resides in their subtle body—know them to be demoniacal in their commitment.

व्याख्या - Explanation

(1) उनकी रुचि सदा शास्त्र से विपरीत ही होती है। तामसी बुद्धि होने से वे स्वयं तो शास्त्रों को जानते नहीं और दूसरों के बताने को मानते नहीं। उनके यह भाव रहता है कि मनुष्य शरीर में भी भोग नहीं किया तो मनुष्य शरीर पाने का क्या लाभ ? भोग सामग्री को प्राप्त करने के लिये वे हठपूर्वक जिद से तप करते हैं।
(2) वे शरीर में स्थित पाँच तत्त्वों को कृश करते (सुखाते) हैं ओैर इसी को तप समझते हैं। कृष्ण ने आगे जिसे तप कहा है, वहाँ शरीर को कष्ट देने की बात नहीं है- वह बड़ी शान्ति से होता है, पर यहाँ शास्त्रविरुद्ध घोर तप का वर्णन है। कृष्ण कहते हैं कि ऐसे लोग मेरी आज्ञा के अनुसार नहीं चलते, इसलिये अन्तःकरण में स्थित मुझ परमात्मा को भी कृश करते हैं।
(3) उनके तप का लक्षण है- शरीर को सुखाना, कष्ट देना। वे तप को तो बहुत अच्छा मानते हैं, परन्तु भगवान् को, शास्त्र को नहीं मानते। बहुत ज्यादा भूखे रहना, काँटों पर सोना, एक पैर पर खड़े रहना, अग्नि का ताप सहना, अपने शरीर, मन, इन्द्रियों को किसी तरह कष्ट पहुंँचाना- ये सब आसुरी प्रवृत्ति वालों के तप होते हैं।

  1. Their inclination is always against the scriptures. Being afflicted with mode of delusion, they are themselves ignorant of scriptures and refuse to believe what others tell them. Their persistent attitude is that sense- enjoyment is the purpose of human life. They perform horrific penances tenaciously with the objective of attaining bodily, worldly pleasures.
  2. By their harsh penances they rob the five elements of the body of their strength, and consider this to be penance (tapa). Krishna has explained the nature of penance in following verses, but there no bodily tortures are involved. Krishna says that such persons, by defying my injunctions weaken Me, Supreme Spirit, who resides in every creature’s subtle body.
  3. The signs of their penance (tapa) are— drying or torturing the body. They accord great importance to penance, but have no faith in scriptures or in God. Starving the body, sleeping on thorns, standing on one leg, exposing the body to fire, inflicting all sorts of tortures on gross body, senses, mind—all this constitutes the penance of demoniac natures.
